Hi Reader, If you’re flying anywhere in 2026, there’s an important luggage update you need to know before you pack. ⚠️Carry on rules are getting an overhaul⚠️ Airlines have finally started working toward one standard size for carry on bags. This should make travel easier, but it also means a lot of bags that used to squeeze by may not cut it in 2026. The new standard size is tighteningMany airlines are shifting to a shared guideline of 22 x 14 x 9 inches, wheels and handles included. If your bag is over those measurements or has one of those chunky wheel wells, it might be too big. Tip: If you’re buying new luggage, look for brands that specifically list “2026 carry on compliant,” “2026 TSA approved,” or “airline approved.” Personal items are getting redefinedAirlines are cracking down on what counts as personal items. Backpacks are still fine, but they need to slide fully under the seat. Tip: Those overstuffed tote bags that everyone swears will fit, usually don’t. Weight limits are being enforcedThis is the one people forget. More airlines are introducing carry on weight limits between 15 and 22 pounds. Not all North American carriers are doing this yet, but international carriers are leading the way and it’s spreading. Tip: If you pack heavy shoes or camera gear, weigh your carry on at home. “Smart luggage” must have removable batteriesThis rule has existed for a while, but 2026 is when enforcement ramps up. If the lithium battery can’t be removed, it cannot fly. Tip: Double check your older Away or Monos bags if you’re unsure. Overhead space is still first come, first serveEven within the new rules, space is limited. The earlier you board, the better your chances of keeping your bag with you. Tip: If you’re someone who hates gate checking, choose a seat in a boarding group that gets you on early. What this means for your 2026 travelIf your suitcase is more than a few years old, this is the perfect time to measure it. A half inch really does matter now. And honestly, with all the changes coming, it might be time to add a new piece of luggage to your Christmas wish list. Which isn’t the worst thing is it?? 🤩 Have a great weekend!
